چکیده
زندگی و آرای تریسترام شندی، نجیب‌زاده، یکی از نامتعارف‌ترین آثاری که تاکنون نوشته‌شده، تفاوت چشمگیری با سایر رمانهای هم‌عصر و حتی رمانهای پایان قرن هجدهم در پی‌رنگ، روایت و رفتارِ شخصیت‌‌هایش دارد. در این مقاله، جنبه‌های مختلفی از رمان که سرمنشأ را در زندگی و شخصیتِ تریسترام شندی به چالش کشیده و ساختارشکنی می‌کند، مورد بررسی قرار گرفته‌است. روشن است که تریسترام شندی خود را از مرحله‌های نامشروطی که اغلب در روایت‌های سنتی بدیهی شمرده می‌شوند، از جمله تولد به مثابه پیدایش شخصیت‌ها، اعتقادی راسخ به هدف‌دار بودن یک روایت برای فرجام‌های آموزنده یا اخلاقی، ثبات سرآغازها وآرایش معقول ایده‌ها در ذهن بشر جدا می‌کند. این مقاله به چهار بخش اصلی از جمله تولد، تاریخ، زندگی و ذهن‌گرایی بشر دسته‌بندی شده و بر آن است تا چندین جنبه منحصر به فرد رمان را نمایان کند در حالی که، به خوانش دقیقِ متن هم توجه دارد. با این هدف، مقاله به ویژه رویِ رویدادهای پیرامون شخصیت تریسترام شندی، پدرش والتر شندی و عمو توبی تمرکز می‌کند. نظریة ارتباط ایده‌های لاک، که استرن بعدها آن را به ناقض نظریه اصلی لاک در روایت برگردان می کند، در این مقاله نیز مورد واکاوی قرار گرفته‌است.
